September Showers

It's official!  This is the wettest Tucson September.... ever.  And it's not over yet!!  Look -- we even got hail.  It was really neat because the sun was shining while it was really coming down.  (I did allow Cairn out of quiet time to come enjoy this marvel of nature.  Aren't I a good mom?)

Here's a random picture of my cute girls.  I think this was one of the times Cairn said, "Mommy we're playing good! Take a picture!"  How can I resist when its put that way?  These girls really do play well together.  Cairn dotes on Cerise and Cerise idolizes Cairn.
Last Sunday Grant needed to do homework.  Cerise needed a nap. Cairn wanted to do her journal.  I wanted to do nothing for a second.

Grant started nodding off.  Cerise refused my attempts to soothe her to sleep.  Cairn decided to do anything but her journal.  I took this picture.

A family that games together... eats orange cupcake batter together!
A Note on Preschool...
It occurred to me today that I still haven't said much about Cairn's preschool yet.  I'm sorry to be so lax... mostly to myself because there have been some great activities that I'd love to repeat with subsequent children.
First of all, the set up.  There's three families in our co-op and a total of five children.  The other two mom's and I take turns hosting and teaching.  So I taught the first week at my home then we went to Nastia's house the next week and she taught and so on...  We only meet two hours a day, two days a week.  We don't have a set curriculum.  Instead, we have assigned topics for each month and we prepare our own lessons around those lessons. We try to include a sitting still and listening part and a practicing skills part in an activity that ties into the lesson.
So as not to bore you...  here's a quick list of just activities we've done (We've almost always had a story, but I dare say I couldn't remember them all if I tried...)
  • Cooked apple dumplings
  • All about Me books
  • Paper dolls with the kids faces pasted on
  • Filling a picnic plate with foods found in the grocery ads
  • Painting rocks to look like red lady bugs
  • Cutting out and decorating a balloon
  • Sorting balloons with capital and lower case B's on them (done with physical balloons and on a worksheet)
  • Special guest....

My friend Christian Wasson does balloon creations as a part time job.  At one point he went to an international balloon competition in California and placed 2nd... He's really really good.  The kids... and moms were all mesmerized as he twisted and squeeked the balloons into... things...  We had a pink giraffe, a penguin, a fish with bubbles, a pink and yellow elephant and a sword.  Amazing!

I'm really enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of our preschool... and socializing with other moms regularly.  Do you know, grown ups speak slightly more intelligibly than children.  At least on good days we do...
