This weekend Cairn and I attended her first Girl Scout Camping trip. I told Grant I was going to be positive about it... but... Ok, so let me complain just a touch on one subject: The Boy Scout.
One of the other leader's sons came. He's working on his cooking merit badge and needed to cook for someone. He's the one the tended the cooking fire and roasted the hot dogs. He's the only one that tended the fire that whole night. There wasn't any instruction for the girls, no letting them get their hands dirty. And they were fine with it that way. He was also THE go to person for taking down tents the next morning... and anything that you'd expect a boy scout to be able to do. But it seemed the girls were all there just for the silliness and sisterhood.
And now that I've stated the real purpose of ANY Girl Scout event I can go on in a more positive light. Silliness and Sisterhood. There were girls all over the place! And they sang silly songs. They put on hula hoop contests and shows. They were giggling until.... I'm sure some of them didn't go to sleep. I'll have Cairn elaborate on the sillinesses when she's done doing dishes so I'm willing to share a mother's day chocolate with her.
Cairn's addition:
I can finally hula hoop! And one of my friends Addy she hula hooped for me and I watched then I tried and thats how I hula hooped. We roasted marshmallows. We sung some silly songs. Like "the little red wagon" and the banana song and beaver song. I didn't know these songs before I went. We played Little Sally Walker where we took turns doing silly dance moves and I'll teach it to you next time we come. We went to the beach. We had a lot of floaties that we played in the water with and we made a sand castle. We also played a made up silly game that was throwing beach balls around at people's faces and backs and stuff.
The following day was the award/ bridging ceremony for the other troops. We were invited to join, but we're so new that I'm not organized enough yet and the girls haven't finished earning their first major badge! So I decided to invite our troop to attend so we could learn what a Girl Scout ceremony entails first hand. And I learned that it is just a little less silliness and a little more sisterhood and a lot of girls not knowing what's really going on. But it was followed by a family picnic and swimming in the lake so every one was happy!
Grant brought Cerise and Gauge for the ceremony and picnic part. And we successfully sunblocked everyone enough that there isn't a burn on us! The water was a bit on the chilly side, but as the wind didn't kick up again until... today, we were warm and toasty and learned quickly to enjoy the lake very much!
Now, note the title.
The camp out wasn't the only big Cairn thing this weekend. She also gave a three minute talk in sacrament meeting. I vow I will never help a child write a mother's day talk again. To write her talks we sit down and I ask her questions about the topic. I continue asking questions until I feel like I have something workable. Then I put her answers into paragraphs that sort of flow together. It felt too self-serving to sit down with my child and try to pull out three minutes of why I'm a good Mom. It felt unfair to myself to ask questions about why other people are good moms. Then it felt long and arduous to make her practice this talk over and over and over again. Then I sat to listen to her read the talk in sacrament meeting and thought she's so much cuter and speaks so much more smoothly when she's standing at the podium talking rather than reading. Why didn't I just blow it off and tell her to forget the three minute time limit and go up to bear testimony and include something about why she loves me?
But then the compliments came to me for her being able to read the two pages (typed font size 20) by herself. Maybe it was about me after all!
