Christmas
Ok, so 813 miles is much less than what we drove... it's about 869 miles from Tucson to San Antonio along I-10... but the song is still completely applicable!
On our way out to San Antonio we stopped in El Paso for the night. Across the freeway from our hotel was a nice city park so we went on over to waste some of Cairn's pent up energy. This park seemed to be built to withstand floods. All of the equipment stood on stilts a good foot and a half above the ground... That's where all the ladder rungs began and the slides ended. The monkey bars were almost high enough for me to do without bending my knees (assuming I could still do monkey bars at least)! Because everything was so inaccessible Cairn settled right down into the sand and rather daintily began to scoop it up and sift it through her fingers.
Once in San Antonio we spent lazy mornings with Joe and Melissa then tried to have some sort of activity or outing in the evening which ranged from hanging out at Mom or Pop's to driving out to Fredricksburg and going to the Nimitz museum (during which outing I spent most of the time with Cairn playing in piles of leaves outside while everyone else was in the museum). Christmas eve was at Mom's then Christmas day at Pop's.
On our way home we stayed in Las Cruces and woke up to a good inch or more of snow on the ground. We played in it, Cairn ate it and then Grant drove in it. This was the first time we had no problem going the speed limit and remembering to turn on the lights in New Mexico's safety corridors!
All in all a great trip! Grant and I think this was the best trip to Texas we've had yet. And Cairn definitely enjoyed it too. I think she's missing having cousins, dogs and cats around to play with / torment.
Many thanks to Pop for footing the bill to get us to Texas! And to Joe & Melissa for sparing a room for us! And thanks to all for the plethora of gifts we received!
